he golden age of Hollywood wasn’t so golden for black folks, nor was much else in the country at the time. When we think of early films, we often think of black actors and actresses that were relegated to degrading roles such as the Mammy or the tap dancing butler. However, even back then there were black filmmakers and actors that were making quality, complex work that spoke to our struggles and played to black audiences and some White audiences. Here are some black film pioneers that you should know about.

Mini Biography
Ms. Graves started her career as a singer with The Doodletown Pipers. She later turned to acting appearing regularly on "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" (1967) in 1969 and 1970. She had supporting roles in several films during the 1970s, including Black Eye (1974), That Man Bolt (1973), and Old Drac (1975), with David Niven. On "Get Christie Love!" (1974), which ran during the 1974-1975 season, she played the first black woman hired by a big-city department. She left acting shortly afterward. She died tragically in a house fire in 2002, aged only 54.

Got her start in show business as a member of the singing group, The Doodletown Pipers.

Left her acting career in 1983 to concentrate on her involvement with the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Firefighters responding to a fire in the Hyde Park section of Los Angeles found Graves unconscious in a bedroom of her home. She was taken to Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in nearby Inglewood, where she died. A faulty space heater was determined to be the cause of the blaze. Neighbors said they didn't know of Graves's past life as a TV star. [10 October 2002]

Tamara Dobson was born on May 14, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. She was a model and actress.

Biography and Actress :

She had a degree in fashion illustration and attended the Maryland Institute College of Art. Tamara began her career as a fashion model and posed foe famous fashion magazines like Vogue, Essence, Mademoiselle, Redbook and Ebony. 

She wanted to be an actress and received roles at Hollywood in movies like 'Cleopatra Jones' in 1973 and 'Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold' in 1975.

On October 2, she died in Baltimore, Maryland because of complications from pneumonia and multiple sclerosis at the age of 59 years old.
